We're extremely proud of our state-of-the-art laboratory in Southwood, Farnborough, officially opened on 26 February 2016, following a move from our old premises in Frimley Green, Surrey.
Since the relocation, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) has given the laboratory a glowing report. This means householders and commercial customers can be assured of high quality analysis which is measured against strict international standards and drinking water testing specifications.
The testing carried out at Orion supports us in our goal to supply top quality drinking water to 2.1 million people through a network of pipes more than 14,500 kilometres long.
Our water sampling team collects hundreds of samples each day, from people’s taps at home as well as our boreholes and reservoirs so scientists can check for any unseen contaminants which could affect the quality of water we supply.
The highly-skilled scientific staff make sure the laboratory operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, carrying out tests for a wide variety of contaminants including the microscopic parasite cryptosporidium and sickness-causing bacteria E.coli. They also check that levels of metals, nutrients, insecticides and pesticides found in water samples are within permitted guidelines.
In addition, the scientists are also looking at colour, taste and odour, which are all are also included in the Drinking Water Inspectorate’s quality standards.
The laboratory also supports a wide range of businesses including other water companies, blue chip firms, environmental health organisations, private water suppliers and building maintenance companies offering high quality analytical services to suit their individual requirements.
